Reality shock
Welcome to New York City.

I know that this post may sound like a testament of ingenuousness, ignorance, and absent-mindedness of one's surroundings, but even so I thought it would be reasonable to write about what happened yesterday. We were both walking in Battery Park heading to Rodrigo's house around 8:50pm. The street was completely deserted, with some blockades and police officers here and there.
I was walking with a vase of flowers in hand, an umbrella and my purse, asking myself if I should open the umbrella or not with the increasing drizzle. This is when I heard a police siren. I heard it, but I think I'm already so immune to this sound that I didn't pay much attention to it. It went off again and I asked myself why the police was making this noise. Maybe I was going to cross a street or
something like that, like all the cars close to home.
And what grabbed my attention was Felipe yelling 'Paula'. Yes, for those who know him this sounds VERY strange, since he generally calls me Py. And that's when I looked around and exited the beautiful world of orange and yellow petals and of my 'autistic' question about the existence of the umbrella. There were several police officers looking at me, snipers and machine guns suspicious of my presence. In the street, there was a road block through which I was passing, and for a second I realized that with another step in that direction I would probably have been knocked out by 3 police officers each weighing 100kg and maybe beat with several stick beatings. Nothing happened, I just left the inappropriate place and continued on to our destination, but the very goosebumps from when I would walk in Sao Paulo in a dark street and thus with no one around, the fear of something coming out of nowhere and frightening me, the fear of something unexpected and evil happening came back after laying dormant for so long in the welcoming air of California.
So what? What place is this to close the street, place machine guns and elite snipers at street corners, and prohibit residents from leaving their homes to accomodate someone important in a hotel? Who are they to think that a girl walking in the street with a vase of flowers could be a threat to the Iraqi representative in the UN assembly? Why is this situation better than returning home after work with the car window open and being afraid of what might happen, of being mugged or something even worse?

McDonalds' comparison
Brasil vs. EUA:

Byron's tramslation
Brazil vs. USA
- there's soda in a 900ml size.
- there's double for everything. Double quarter pounder = 2 hamburgers instead of one.
- there's super Angus with at least 770kcal in 1 sandwich.
- there's scary calorie info on the menu - it's NY law.
- there's fatter straws, providing a greater flow of the drink.
- there is no small size. Our medium is the small.
- there's a minimum portion of 10 nuggets rather than 6.
- there's breakfast. Wow, McEgg.
No wonder I have a pretty bad stomachache.

Soft City Ice Cream

Peguei uns trocados e a máquina, claro.
Claro! E no próximo verão vou variar o sabor.

I always thought that ice cream trucks only existed in Woody the Woodpecker and old American films. Several of them, parked at different street corners, have taken me by surprise in the city. It goes without saying that having one of these ice creams had to be part of my life gastronomic experiences, and with the arrival of autumn I started to look for them more often, fearing that they would disappear with the cold.
I didn't have to look very far because there's one at the corner outside my house. Ok, I know, you must think my house is situated at 16 street corners, but it's true that there's everything here. But when I look for the truck, it's never there. And when I'm in a rush, running after a bus, going to the metro, or on a diet day, it's there.
And today I was at home and decided to look out the window and saw it there below. I took some small change and, of course, my camera. The guy inside was very nice. The fact that he was nice was surprising for two reasons: first because I am in NY, and second because his space is so tiny and I kept imagining the heat he endures on hot summer days. I told him that I had never had one of these ice creams and asked for a suggestion.
Chocolate dip.
Hm... up to that point, I had thought of getting the typical white blob with lots of colored sprinkles, but it probably looks better in a photos than it tastes, so I took his suggestion. What did it taste like? It seemed like homemade ice cream and it very much reminded me of ice cream that we had at our neighbors' (Kat&Dan) house when they made it with an ice cream machine. The difference is that it was fatty, VERY fatty like anything tasty, but it was bordering on being too fatty for me and I didn't manage to eat the whole thing. Would I have it again? Definitely! And next summer I will try something different.

Over 1000 readers
E me bate sim a curiosidade pra saber quem nesse exato segundo está lendo esssa frase. Ufa, acaba aqui o momento filosófico do dia.

Today I just took a quick look around my blog and realized that over 1000 people already came here, around my pictures and my stories. Wow, that's amazing! I am really curious about who are you, the person in front of a computer reading what Paula writes. Where are you, where did you come from, what did you have for dinner yesterday? Well, you know I had cupcakes, but what about you? Are you happy, sad, cold, hungry?
It's crazy to think about a blog story, posts I publish, so many readers, people I know or someone I don't know? Hm... anyway, end of my philosophic moment of the day.
