Starbucks & election

Eu recebo mil coisas por email todos os dias. Seja os catálogos de todas as lojas de coisas de casa, de linhas de produtos Aveda e maquiagens MAC, happy hour em cervejaria da California que nem tem em NY, enfim. Lixo, lixo, lixo que eu gosto. E hoje eu recebi um email do Starbucks que me deixou intrigada.


Isso é uma iniciativa legal, num país onde os critérios de votos e justificativas ainda dão um nó na minha cabeça que cresceu em outro lugar onde votar é obrigatório. Tá, tá, não vou dar sermão em ninguém por justificar, viajar, ter preguiça de trocar de cartório quando mudou de cidade, mas sim, eu ainda sou quadradinha e acho que meu voto conta e que todos deveriam pensar assim.

E aí me veio essa campanha do Starbucks. Isso é bom pois incentiva as pessoas a votarem? Ou isso é ruim, as pessoas deveriam votar pela responsabilidade que carregam, independentemente de ganhar um cafézinho ou não? Será que tem gente que votaria por conta desse panfletinho? Ah, eu não duvido de nada, viu?! E aí que porcaria de voto consciente, pensando no futuro, nas propostas e no país vai sair de uma decisão assim? Será que no final é melhor mesmo deixar o voto facultativo e assim só vota quem quer e exclui-se as pessoas desinteressadas?

I receive a thousand things by email each day. Be it catalogs from all types of home furnishing stores, product lines from Aveda and make-up from MAC, happy hour in a bar in California that we don't have in NY, etc. Garbage, garbage, garbage that I love. And today I received an email from Starbucks that left me intrigued.

This is a nice initiative considering a country where the voting criteria and processes still give me a headache as I grew elsewhere where voting is obligatory and you go there, choose your president and that is it. There are some ways in which you can justify your absence in an election in Brazil, but people use it in the wrong way. Ok, ok, I'm not going to give a sermon to anyone that likes to travel or if someone moved to a different city and didn't change its address in the electoral registry (yes, this is one of the ways you can NOT vote), but I still think that my vote counts, that everyone should think similarly, and people should take this responsibility more seriously.

And then this Starbuck's campaign came to me. Is this good as incentive for people to vote? Or is this bad, that people should vote due to the responsibilities that they bear, independent of getting a coffee or not? Will it be that there are people who would vote as a result of this flyer? Ah, I wouldn't doubt it! And then what happens to responsible and conscious votes, based on what people think of the future, of candidates' ideas? Will it be that in the end it's even better to permit optional voting and in this way only those who want to vote do so and automatically excludes those disinterested?

Alas, it makes my head hurt.
